Drawing Together Episode 4: Ceci N’est Pas Une Pipe!
this episode is Part of the Drawing Together live video series – learn more here
Could this be real?! I found my Grandfather’s old pipe and it got me thinking of the famous painting by Rene Magritte, “Ceci N’est Pas Une Pipe”. Today, I’ll change things up a bit by working on toned paper and focusing on the details of this object, thinking about really pushing the realism in the drawing.
Today, I’m working with:
- Toned Paper
- Vine Charcoal
- Charcoal Pencil
- White Chalk Pencil
- Kneaded and Rubber Erasers

Here is the pipe.
Here’s my pipe. Love the white charcoal details.
I’m really enjoying your episodes. Thank you.
Enjoyed using the white chalk
Forgot to add my drawing.
Better late than never. My father in law smoked a LOT of different pipes. This made me think of him!
Love it….you can feel the roundness of the bowl. My friend and I are doing it today so I’ll post mine later.
This is great!
I had missed this one, among others the first week, and just finally went back and finished it! Better late than never.
