Art Bound Podcast, Ep. 13: Pushing the Boundaries of Color
Artists Anna Valdez and Janna Watson use a broad range of bright, striking hues to convey the spectrum of human emotion, identity, and meaning.

In this episode of Artists Network’s Art Bound podcast, host and K Contemporary gallery owner Doug Kacena explores the bold use of color with Anna Valdez and Janna Watson, two artists who use a broad range of bright, striking hues to convey the spectrum of human emotion, identity, and meaning. The three artists discuss their creative philosophies when it comes to pushing the boundaries of color in their artwork, as well as the role color plays in artistic (and human) expression.
About Anna Valdez
ANNA VALDEZ is an artist based in Oakland, California, whose colorful work examines the relationship between material and cultural identity. Valdez incorporates articles found in domestic spaces such as plants, textiles, vessels, and keepsakes into her work as a method of storytelling. Her art, which has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States, invites the viewer to consider objects as emblematic of personal and collective experience, shifting between still life, landscape, and portraiture. About Janna Watson
JANNA WATSON is an artist based in Toronto, Canada. Her work employs bundles of color, sweeps of paint, and thin, rigid ink lines that cut into the pictorial field. The result is a conceptual project (and distinct, stylistic signature) that uses abstraction “as both an escape from and return to the real.” Watson also runs Studio Watson, a business dedicated to redefining interiors with hand-tufted floor pieces inspired by the artist’s abstract compositions.
